Big Idea:  How can changes transform the way people look at the world?
 

Unit One covers the following topics:  

 

Comprehension strategies - rereading, finding character, setting, plot, sequence, and problem and solutions, how to ask and answer questions, cause and effect, sequencing, and understanding the author's point of view.  

 

Genres - realistic fiction, narrative nonfiction, biographies, and persuasive articles.

 

Phonics - Short vowels, long vowels, r-Controlled vowels, and words with /u/.

Unit Four   CHALLENGES
 
Week 1 - Changing Environments
Week 2 - Overcoming Challenges
Week 3 - Standing Tall
Week 4 - Shared Experiences
Week 5 - Taking Responsibility
Week 6 - Review
Big Idea:  How do people meet challenges and solve problems?

Unit Four covers the following topics:  

 

Comprehension strategies - Rereading, author's point of view, summarizing, theme, literary elements (alliteration and assonance).

 

Genres - Expository text, biographies, drama, free-verse fiction and narrative.

 

Word study and phonics - Suffix (-ion), vowel alternation, prefixes, Greek and Latin prefixes, consonant alternation

Unit Two:   EXCURSIONS ACROSS TIME
 
Week 1 - Contributions
Week 2 - Democracy
Week 3 - Ancient Societies
Week 4 - Influences
Week 5 - Past and Present
Week 6 - Review
Big Idea:  What can we gain from reading about past civilizations?
 

Unit Two covers the following topics:  

 

Comprehension strategies - Asking and answering questions, problem and solution, comparing and contrasting, predictions, point of view, poetry and sonnets, and theme.  

 

Genres - Expository text, historical fiction

 

Word study and Phonics - Irregular plurals, inflectional endings, open and closed syllables, consonants + le syllables.

Unit Three:   ACCOMPLISHMENTS
 
Week 1 - Common Ground
Week 2 - Transformations
Week 3 - Inspiration
Week 4 - Milestones

Big Idea:  What does it take to accomplish a goal?

Unit Three covers the following topics:  

 

Comprehension strategies - Making predictions, theme, summarizing, sequence, cause and effect, asking and answering questions, main idea and key details.

 

Genres - realistic fiction, narrative nonfiction, biographies, expository text.

 

Word Study and Phonics - Team syllables, r-controlled vowel syllables, frequently misspelled words, prefixes and suffixes (-ion and -tion).

Word Study and phonics - Homophones, words from around the world, Latin roots, Greek roots, suffixes (-ive, -age, -ize)

Unit Six covers the following topics:  

 

Comprehension strategies - Ask and answer questions, main idea and key details, cause and effect, summarizing, main idea and key details, and sequencing.

 

Genres - Expository text, narrative nonfiction, lyric poetry and ode

 

Word Study and phonics - Suffixes (-ible, -able, -ance, -ence, -ent), Greek suffixes, absorbed prefixes, and words from mythology.
