Week 5/11-5/15

When is a deal too good to be true? We live in a world of prices and gimmicks that try to draw in customers to save, save, save! This month students are analyzing and interpreting data involving equivalent proportions. They are looking to find errors in pricing, charts, and real life examples to see if price increases are the same for different foods, phone plans, and miles per gallon. Graphing leads students to understand proportional relationships to decide if what they pay will always be the same amount for an item or service. Parents can have this conversation now by talking about phone bills, gym memberships, and even the cost of the daily trip to Starbucks!

Week: (5/11-5/15)

It was a pleasure to meet with those of you who came in Friday to discuss your child's academic work.  Thank you for taking the time to visit.

This week our class will be focusing on what it takes to reach a goal. We will also discuss how one person’s accomplishment can influence other people and their opinions.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

Word Workout:

  • Words to Know: paragraph clues In this activity, you and your child will talk about the words on the word list and come up with a topic for using most or all of them in one paragraph. You can jot down your paragraph and read it back when you are finished.
  • Spelling/Phonics: prefixes The words on this word list begin with a prefix. You will choose one of the words and spell it without its prefix. Then your child says and spells the word with the prefix.

Comprehension: cause and effect:

In this activity, you and your child will read six riddles that start: “Why did the . . .” For each one, your child will match the riddle to its answer. Then you jot down the answers to match causes and effects.

The vocabulary test this week will be on Wednesday, and the Unit 3, Week 4 Assessment will be on Thursday . The homework pages, Your Turn workbook pages 131 - 140, will be due on Thursday.

Please be sure to check GPA and Edmodo for missing assignments.  Help them to be sure to turn in any missing or late assignments so they will not be kept in for detention.

PLEASE NOTE:  Classroom spelling bees will be on Tuesday,, and the schoolwide bee will be held Friday.  Please be sure your student has studied the words which were given to them and posted on Edmodo in preparation for the bees.
