5th Grade

5/11-5/15

Asalamualaikum Parents,

This week, the students will begin Chapter 8 (Facing Slavery) in which the students will learn about the choices West Africans had to make to survive being enslaved and brought to the Americas. Students will explore dilemmas in their own lives and then analyze and respond to three dilemmas faced by Africans during enslavement: Trading slaves for guns in West Africa, suriving the Middle Passage, and living as a slave in the colonies. Students will then identify some aspects of life for enslaved Africans and consider ways in which plantation owners responded to these activities. In the processing activity, students will write a journal entry from the perspective of a West African involved in the slave trade.

**Don’t forget to check class-dojo at the end of the week for missing assignments, and check GPA to see what those missing assignments are, if needed.

Week: (5/11-5/15)

It was a pleasure to meet with those of you who came in Friday to discuss your child's academic work.  Thank you for taking the time to visit.

This week our class will be discussing the benefits of teamwork. We will focus on how scientists work in teams that include people of all ages and backgrounds as they develop new products.

Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.

  • Words to Know: Latin roots. You can help your child make up sentences using the words to describe a team of undersea explorers.

  • Spelling/Phonics: consonant plus -le syllables: dle, le, ble, tle, ple, al, el You will say a word from the list slowly. Your child will write the word, dividing it in syllables using hyphens. Then he or she will identify the letters that make up the last syllable.

Comprehension: main idea and key details:

After reading two passages together, help your child identify the main idea and organize the supporting details.

The vocabulary test this week will be on Wednesday, and the Unit 3, Week 4 Assessment will be on Thursday . The homework pages, Your Turn workbook pages 131 - 140, will be due on Thursday.

Fifth grade will be visiting the library on Tuesday, in shaa Allaah; please remind them to bring any books they checked out so they can be returned.

Please be sure to check GPA and Edmodo for missing assignments.  Help them to be sure to turn in any missing or late assignments so they will not be kept in for detention.

PLEASE NOTE:  Classroom spelling bees will be on Tuesday, and the schoolwide bee will be held Friday.  Please be sure your student has studied the words which were given to them and posted on Edmodo in preparation for the bees.

Week: 5/11-5/15

Every 5th grade student loves money in their pocket and we are working to keep it there! Students are breaking down the problems involving unit rates and ratios to find the best deals by the ounce, can, bottle, etc. and see if the sales in stores are truly worth the price! They are extending to involve cooking and recipes (doubling, tripling, etc.) Encourage your child to do this with you at the store during a weekly shopping trip, or even looking at the weekly ads for local grocery stores. To extend their thinking, you can have conversations about tax being added on to the end of your bill.
