Asalamualaikum Parents,

This week, the students will continue Chapter 21 (The Rise of the Warrior Class in Japan) in which the students will learn and reenact the rise of a warrior class in Japan and the pivotal role these samurai played from the end of the 12th century to the 19th century.

**Don’t forget to check class-dojo at the end of the week for missing assignments, and check GPA to see what those missing assignments are, if needed.

Week 5/11-5-15

Have you ever seen a sale sign that says 1/3 off? You may have, but most of the time that is not used. Why not you ask? Simple, 1/3 is a repeating decimal with no end. Our eighth graders have been working to classify these awkward, yet important numbers into one of five number systems. They have also been looking at what it takes to raise or lower the cost of an item in a store, online, or simply while window shopping. These real world applications allow our students to figure out the best way to write a number, and whether to use a fraction or a decimal as a starting point in a problem. Department stores with percent off sales are a great place to apply this knowledge as a family. Make your child work for their new pair of sneakers by calculating the cost of a 30% off sale. To dig a little deeper you can even throw in the five extra dollars you get back for spending $50 or more to calculate an overall cost!

May 11-15

There will be a two week testing window in which your student will take several English mastery tests. For the week heading into the tests as well as the actual weeks of testing, we will be doing practice tests and review.

These tests will be a measurement of what your student has learned to this point of his/her education... it is not a pass or fail test, nor will they pass or fail their grade level according to the results.

Students should do their best and give their greatest effort. Please see that they have enough rest and eat well so they can do that!

We will also begin compiling student books to be published. These books will contain your students ELA projects and some computer illustrations. They will be available for purchase by you and I look forward to seeing how they come out... there has been some amazing writing this year!

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me... your students have worked hard! The school year is almost finished!

Please encourage your student to read at home... reading makes the mind grow!

Jazakum Allahu Khairun
